1. Olichuchattam Falls

is situated on the way to Vellarimala. 15 kilometers from Thiruvambady and 6 kilometers from Muthappanpuzha, on the way to the Vellimara hills.The water takes a turn at the top and flows down the smooth rock surface. These falls are usually flooded during the monsoon season and have several small streams flowing nearby.The trek leading to them is not an easy task and full of leeches.

2. Kethan Paara

Kethan’s rock is what Kethan Paara literally means in the local kannada language, It is one of the highest points in Kerala state. One can find real wild elephants and bison roaming about in the jungles of the region, the proof of which would be fresh elephant dung lying around the path.

Vavul mala is the tallest peak in Western ghats.A trek to the top of the Vellarimala Mountain can be a challenging one and only the toughest of trekkers usually make it easily to the top.

By Road– Kozhikode has a good road network and is well connected by nearby districts of the state. National highway and state highways passes by the district which make road transport efficient and well maintained.

Aanayadikuthu is located in idukki district and near to Thommankuth waterfall.Kerala is covered with natural waterfall and one of the not so explored name, Anayadikuthu Falls is 22 km trek from Thodupuzha.This is the place where the river flows to the rocks. This waterfall is the only place where the waterfall flows from the bottom.There is a stone like elephant, is very interesting.This is the place where the river flows to the rocks.

Anayadikuthu passes through Kambakkanam and Neykuthanal. This waterfall is very shallow and safe.There is a small forest near to waterfall.Advisable to go there before dawn, as the place is in a remote area.

There is a famous saying about this place is once upon a time, elephant herds used to come here to drink water.Especially in summer from the canal, just above the falls.One day, elephant fell off from the waterfalls while having water from the canal.Hence the name Anayadikuthu.

Another one is that two elephants fought at this place and one fell into the waterfall, which eventually gave the name Aanachadikuthu.This name later converted into Anayadikuthu.

Route – Thodupuzha-Karimannoor-Thomankuthu

When you reach the Thommankuthu post office junction, turn left and move on for another 100 meter and then turn right to the Convent road.Move along the opposite road to the Sister’s Convent. There is a narrow road and only one vehicle can move at a time. Then you will see a two-storied house, this is the landmark . Just a few steps way turn left and walk 100 meter through narrow road. Then turn right and you will see a huge rock, the waterfall lies beyond this rock.

Famous tourist lighthouse beaches in kerala

Among the tourist places in kerala, beaches are the foremost attraction.It is a tower with a bright light at the top,located at an important or dangerous place regarding navigation (travel over water).The two main purposes of a lighthouse are to serve as a navigational aid and to warn boats of dangerous areas. 1. Beypore light house

The major attraction of Beypore beach is Pulimuttu, a rocky pier. The simple structure of piled up rocks is converted to a walkway. It extends to about one km into the sea.This ocean walkway is a popular short cut to rejuvenation.

2. Alappuzha light house

Alappuzha lighthouse construction was started while during the rule of Marthanda Varma – II Maharaja and It was completed during the rule of Rama Varma Maharaja of Travancore. Light house located near the Sea Bridge and at the distance of 4 km from the Alappuzha town in Kerala. Alappuzha Lighthouse tower is 150 year old, build in 1862.It is one of the oldest lighthouses on the south-west coast of India. It was one of the fussiest ports and trade centre of Kerala during that time.

3. Varkala light house

Varkala Lighthouse is a much acclaimed tourist hotpot located near the popular Varkala beach.Varkala Lighthouse is a 17th century edifice built by the British in 1684. Measuring 130 feet tall towering lighthouse was originally built for showing direction for the ships arriving from Britain.

The lighthouse attracts sizeable visitors who come here to explore this renowned historic structure and experience the adorableness and the calmness draped in its surrounding environment.Visitors to this beautiful beach hardly miss the opportunity to explore this standing epitome of British architecture.

4. Vizhinjam light house

Vizhinjam lighthouse is situated near Kovalam beach. Vizhinjam lighthouse is the highest lighthouse in Kovalam that offers the spellbinding view of the sea. It is because if this place that the nearby beach was started knowing as the Lighthouse beachThis light house started functioning on 30 June 1972.Vizhinjam was a busy seaport in the 18th and 19th centuries. Before the current light was installed, there were no lighthouses at this location (Kovalam).

5. Puthuvypin light house(cochin)

Cochin lighthouse is situated at Puthuvype in Vypin island. Puthuvype Beach is located at about 7 km from the heart of the city Kochi. Even though the current lighthouse started functioning only by 15 November 19.Cochin lighthouse has a long history. The lighthouse which was functioning in Fort Kochi from 1839 was shifted to Puthuvype in 1979.Entry tickets are issued from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.Its heard that the view from the top of the light house is marvelous Under a clear sky.It provides a panoramic glimpse of the city beneath.

6. Thangassery Light House (Kollam)

Thangassery Lighthouse is situated at Tangasseri in Kollam city.light house started functioning since 1902.cylindrical lighthouse tower painted with white and red oblique bands has a height of 41 metres, 135feet, making it the 2nd highest lighthouse on the Kerala Coast.This seaside village of historic importance shelters the ruins of an old Portuguese fort and churches built during the 18th century. It is situated 5 km away from Kollam town in the state of Kerala.

 

The months between November and February are perfect to visit Kerala. Expect moderate temperatures and lush green estates. Of course these are peak months, so expected higher rates and crowds at popular places.July and August are popular with tourists too as this is peak monsoon season.

1.Chalakkudi- Athirapilly- Valparayi

Chalakkudy – Valparai -Pollachi is a beautiful route along the western ghat forests.
There are a number of interesting places along the road from Chalakkudy to Athirippilly waterfalls.Dream world water theme park, Silver storm water theme park are located on this road.
Another interesting tourist place is the thumboormuzhi river garden located about 16KM from Chalakkudy. This is a good place to spent time and has toilet facilities and children’s park.
There are a number of resorts around this place.
The route from Athirippilly to Vazhachal is through the forest and somewhere in the middle is the beautiful Charpa falls.There is also a large population of monkeys around this place.
The water droplets from the falls will shower your face as you drive along the road.
Around 32KM from Vazhachal check post) we reached the Sholayar lake situated in Kerala.You get an entirely different experience from peringalkuthu lake since now you are at a vantage point giving you a bird’s eye view of the entire area. Malakkappara is full of tea plantations and it is a treat to the eye. Tamilnadu check post in Malakkappara is located around 2KM from the Kerala check post.

The road from Valparai to Pollachi goes through it and if you are alert along your drive, you are sure to sight a lot of animals/birds. The road is well maintained by Tamilnadu government and there are 40 hairpin bends on this road.

2.Kochi- Kottayam-Vagamon

The roads were so good, twisting and turning and the traffic was also less. Malankara dam is hardly 1km off the main road Thodupuzha. The place was calm and is a nice spot for a small break and a few snaps.Muttom – Erattupetta road. This road was not so good compared to the road till Muttom, but still was not so bad too. The drive is normal as the roads were good and there were no difficult hair pins bends on this route except for some twists and turns here and there.

Note :Anyone visiting Wagamon by private vehicle, please ensure that you have more than enough fuel before you start, or please fill it before Erattupetta itself.

3.Kochi- Munnar- Devikulam

Cochin to Munnar is one of the most beautiful and scenic road trips .The whole drive from Cochin to Munnar is marked with some remarkable views of the mountains and the valleys.
There is a spice garden on way from cochin to munnar.Spice garden had plants and trees of almost all spices known in India. Also, it had different plants of medicinal and herbal value.Cochin to munnar will take approximately 4hours.

Devikulam is about 7km from Munnar in the Idukki district. Nature lovers are here for a treat as they can admire and study divergent flora and fauna.Devikulam is a trekker’s delight and an excursion through plantations and red gum trees would truly vouch for an enchanting experience.

One should surely not miss a guided plantation tour to know more about the flora and fauna of Devikulam.One can plan a trip covering Devikulam as well as Munnar which is very close by.

Devikulam is easily accessible by road from both Kochi and Kottayam and the road trip is a pleasing experience to nature lovers. Road options include both State Transport Buses and private buses. The route to Devikulam is full of breathtaking sceneries and steep slopes. Tickets are cheap; buses can be crowded though.

4. Kochi- Kuttikanam- Thekkady

Kuttikanam near Peermedu in Idukki is a place for adventure tourism and trekking .The best time to visit here are the months of April and May. The place is enriched with greenish tea, misty hills, cardamom estates, variety of green woods, beautiful waterfalls and chill weather with refreshing winds. about 1 km from Kuttikanam, Parunthupara or Grampi is a rock sculpture near the hill station.

Thekkady from Kochi is one of the most beautiful ones. Though there are few different routes. At Thekkady, there are lot of activities to be done like Forest Trekking, Lake Cruise, Jeep Safari, Bullock Cart rides, Tiger Trail, Bamboo rafting, Elephant Rides.

5. Munnar – Thekkady

Munnar is undoubtedly the most visited tourist destination in Kerala. And Thekkady is not far behind.The entire route is of high terrains with mountains, hills, tea plantations and cardamom estates. A good number of visitors to Munnar visit the Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekkady.

The distance between Munnar and Thekkady is about 85 to 90 km.The roads are very narrow and broken in some places especially during monsoon. From Munnar to Thekkady is about 3 hours. If you are driving yourself, drive slow and carefully.

Most beautiful and scenic route:The most scenic and beautiful route is Munnar-Devikulam- Pooppara-Udumbanchola-Thekkady. This route is about 100 km but the amazing scenic beauty along the route is worth the extra drive.

Fastest route:The fastest route is, Munnar – Chithirapuram – Anachal – Rajakkad – Karithode – Nedumkandam – Thekkady.

 

Palakkad is the gateway to Kerala from the north. Palakkad was known as Palghat during British rule.Palakkad district has its own special characteristics. Palakkad is known as the Granary of Kerala. The name was later changed from Palghat to Palakkad by the government of Kerala.The district has vast stretches of lush green paddy fields, with tributaries of Bharathapuzha river criss-crossing it. Ironically, once upon a time it was also the largest producer of Paddy in the state, popularly called ‘Nellara’ or the grain warehouse of Kerala. Those days have gone by long ago.

Palakkad Attractions:

1.Tipu Sulthan Fort

Tipu’s Fort, also known as Palakkad Fort.Stands in the heart of Palakkad town. Palakkad is a small town on the lower edges of the Sahyadri ranges of the Western Ghats, with patches of dense forests and crisscrossed with rivers.
The Palakkad Fort is said to have existed from very ancient times, but believed to be constructed in present form in 1766A.D. But little is known of its early history. The local ruler, Paliyath Achchan was originally a tributary of the Zamorin. But had become independent before the beginning of the eighteenth century.

2..Malampuzha Dam And Rock Garden

a little township on the foothills of the Western Ghats takes its name from the River Malampuzha. Nurtured by this tributary of Kerala’s longest river. The Bharathapuzha, Malampuzha is a lush green town is a major tourist attraction for its trekking trails and the large irrigation dam.

The most interesting feature of the rock garden is that the whole place is made of unwanted and broken pieces of bangles, tiles, used plastic cans, tins and other waste materials. The garden is a master work of sculptor Padmasree Neck Chand Saini. His rock garden in Chandigarh is world famous and attracts thousands of tourists every year.

3.Nelliapathy Hills

The height of the hills ranges from 467 m to 1572 m.To reach Nelliyampathy, one has to take the road starting from Nenmara that proceeds to the Pothundy Dam. There are about 10 hairpin bends that have to be negotiated on the way to Nelliyampathy. From the town of Nenmara in Palakkad district, the cloud-caressed peaks of the majestic Nelliyampathy hill ranges are a sight to behold.

Privately owned hotels and resorts are located at various points  as one goes up the hills of Nelliyampathy. The bio-farms located here are a major landmark as one proceeds up before reaching the topmost point at Palagapandi estate. The estate has a quaint bungalow, built during the period of the British rule in India, and has now been converted into a private owned resort. At Kaikatty, a community hall is available, which is usually used as a base by those interested in trekking.

4.Kalpathy (Kalpathy Ratholsavam)

Kalpathi is a traditional Tamil Brahmin settlement in Kerala. The temple dedicated to Lord  Shiva or Viswanatha is believed to be 700 years old. Vedic recitals and cultural programmes render a unique ambience for the place.

5 Siruvani Dam

Siruvani dam is a dam at Palakkad District. Located 46 km away from Palakkad town.This dam constructed across the Siruvani River. Is for supplying drinking water to the city of Coimbatore in Tamilnadu. The dam is surrounded by reserve forests. Muthikulam hill is situated on the eastern side of the dam. There is a natural waterfall in the hill. The waterfalls and the Dam are big tourist attractions. The famous 150-year-old Pattiyar Bungalow is on the banks of the Siruvani Reservoir.

6. Silent Valley

The Silent Valley National Park with an area of 237. 52 sq km. Located in the Northeastern corner of Palakkad district. It rises abruptly to the Nilgiri Plateau in the North and overlooks the plains of Mannarkkad in the South. Extremely fragile, a unique preserve of tropical evergreen rain forests which is a veritable nursery of flora and fauna, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.

7.Parambikulam Wild life Sanctuary

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is a well protected ecological portion in the Nelliampathy. Anamalai landscape of the Southern Western Ghats in India. It is located in the Palakkad District of Kerala. It is one of the biodiversity hot spot in the world supports diverse habitat types and endemism. Considering its bioalogical richness, abundance of wildlife and landcape beauty makes Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is one of the most attractive places in the entire stretch of Western Ghats. It was declared as Tiger Reserve during 2009 with total area of 643.66 SqKm, which includes core area of 390.89 and 252.77 Sq Km Buffer area.

Swimming is allowed during Oct to May. The beach is not idle for any activities from Jun to Aug due to monsoon and heavy under currents.

Paragliding in Poovar Beach – As part of starting adventure activities, the Govt have a proposal to make paragliding in the Poovar Beach. But it has not yet started.

Best time to visit Poovar:-

Kerala generally have monsoon in the month of June – July – August. During monsoon the water flow of rivers in Poovar is very high some times transferring boat from Jetty to resorts is very risky or dangerous at that time.
Considering the monsoon in Kerala – the best time to visit Poovar is from Aug to May.

Muzhupilangad beach is located parallel to National Highway between Kannur and Thalassery.This beach is the longest Drive-In Beach in India. Kappad beach is a famous beach near Kozhikode.where the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed on 20 May 1498. His voyage established the sea route from Europe to India. This established a permanent route from Europe to India. This heralded the arrival and permanent presence of various European merchant companies, leading to eventual domination and rule by the East India Company and later the period of British colonial rule.

9.Fort Kochi Beach
Fort Kochi beach is a beach along the Arabian Sea situated in Old Kochi respectively Fort Kochi area of the city of Kochi.Uniques views and point of interests are the so-called Chinese fishing nets and the fishermen working there: commonly known as “Chinese fishing nets” they are shore operated lift nets.Colonial-style bungalows can be seen along the shoreline, as well as the Vasco da Gama square, the remains of Fort Emmanuel along the granite walkway and lots of small stalls, which make traditional cuisines using freshly caught fish. A section of the beach is not accessible to visitors as it is under the control of the Indian Navy.
